Signs, Flags & Lights for Mississippi Oversize Permits

Signs displaying “Oversize Load” are mandatory for all loads exceeding 12 feet in width. Flags must be affixed to all corners of loads surpassing 10 feet in width, mounted at a height of approximately six feet above the pavement. Loads exceeding 12 feet in width necessitate flashing amber lights on the rear and flags on the front corners of the load. Additionally, over-length loads and those with an overhang in excess of 4 feet must be flagged.

Permitting Superloads

  • The specifications determining a “superload” vary from state to state (refer to the “Routine Permit Limits” section for details on the relevant states).
  • Approval and issuance of a superload permit in certain states may take one to two weeks. Delays should be anticipated.
  • The approval process for superload permits in states may involve requirements such as letters from the shipper, route surveys, district-by-district engineering approvals, etc., potentially causing delays in the approval process.
  • Carefully measure your load. Even an additional inch or two in height can significantly impact routing and turnaround time for a superload.
