Ultimate Guide to Utah Oversize Permits

UTAH OVERSIZE PERMITS DURATION :
Utah oversize permits are valid for a duration of five days and must be obtained before entering the state. Alternatively, permits can be purchased at state line Points of Entry (POEs) or at interior ports if the driver calls ahead for permission (relevant phone numbers are available on the Utah provision sheet).
OPERATING TIME:
Travel is permitted from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, including both Saturday and Sunday. There is an exception for loads not exceeding 10′ in width, legal height, 92′ overall length, and 10′ overhang, which may travel 24/7 on all highways provided they have proper lights. This includes marker lights indicating extreme width, amber lights at the front and center of the load, and red lights at the rear. Additionally, lights and flags are required on rear overhang exceeding 4′.
RESTRICTED TRAVEL:
Loads surpassing 10′ in width, legal height, and 105′ overall length are restricted from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM Monday through Friday in specific counties: Box Elder – all highways south of exit 357 of I-15 (Perry Interchange), all highways in Weber, Davis, and Salt Lake counties, and in Utah county, all highways north of SR75-Exit 261 I-15 (Ironton) and SR68 MP 16. Holiday travel is prohibited during major holidays, holiday weekends, and on Pioneer Day (July 24th). For updated holiday restrictions, it is advisable to check with the Permit Office.

Divisible Loads Exceeding 80,000: A permit can be requested to surpass 80,000 gross on state highways and Interstates, given that all axle/group weights comply with legal limits and the load is prorated at 80,000 pounds for Utah.

SIGNS, FLAGS & LIGHTS:
Flags are obligatory to mark all extremities on loads extending beyond the sides and on vehicles wider than 10′. They are also required on front overhangs exceeding 3′, rear overhangs exceeding 4′, and on trailer corners for overheight-only loads. “Oversize Load” signs, both front and rear, are mandatory on vehicles or loads wider than 10′ or taller than 14′. These signs must be displayed at the rear of any vehicle exceeding 92′ in length, whether loaded or empty. Overhangs of 20′ or more must be equipped with a rotating, flashing, or oscillating amber light mounted at the end and at least 4′ above ground level.
